Raul Mollehuara Canales

Oulu Mining School Researcher with expertise in characterisation of mining waste (e.g., tailings, waste rock stockpiles, mine water, leach residue stockpiles) for management, treatment, and circular economy strategies. His work combines core research disciplines such as mineralogy, electrochemistry, geochemistry, hydrogeology, and applied geophysics to conceptualise and advance R&D applications in mine rehabilitation/closure, mine water management and control, and advanced monitoring technologies for waste infrastructure in mining environments. His work also makes use of the comprehensive characterisation of side-streams and waste generated in mining processes to support the circular economy research area to reprocess, transform, or upcycle these materials, thereby creating value in so-called mining waste as secondary resource for minerals and materials. His approach to scaling up R&D projects encompass digitalisation workflows to enable OT/IT convergence in mining operation areas beyond the centralised digital transition of ore extraction and mineral processing plants.

Raul holds a PhD in Mining Engineering and Mineral Processing (Applied Geophysics), MSc in Water Resources Management (Hydrogeology), PEng in Chemical Engineering, and 20 years of industry experience. He joined Oulu Mining School in 2017 through the Marie S. Curie I4Future doctoral programme.
